PAUL by Judy Verhoeven, collage painting, detail

Portraits – if you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all, right?

Eleven emerging Upstate artists decided to collaborate and expand the frontiers of what a portrait is and can be. Each artist contributed two pieces to the show – a self-portrait and a portrait of one of the other artists drawn at random.

The finished works include paintings (both representational and abstract), photography, beadwork, collage – in short, it’s not your typical portrait collection. The work illuminates some interesting ideas. How do you define the self? What are the differences in how you view yourself vs. how others view you? With so many aspects making up a personality, what is the essence of a person, and how do you represent that?

Join the artists for a casual, open group discussion of the works on display, learn what inspired them and how they were created, ask questions, offer your insights, and immerse yourself in the artistic process. Discussion moderated by Axel Forrester from the Governor’s School.
